But he also knows hard work, discipline, and focusing on real priorities can change the world. And he knows we shouldn’t give up on anyone, because it’s never too late to start building a bright and better future.
The oldest of five children, Miguel grew up in Berks County with the support and love of a couple very strong women – his mom and his grandmother. Between kindergarten and the 12th grade he attended four different schools, only to drop out of Reading High School shortly before graduation to get a job to support his newborn son.
Early on he got married, bought a house, earned his GED in night school while his wife finished college, and got a fulltime job at the Berks County Youth Center. Together they would have two kids, but the marriage ended in divorce – incurring heartache, disappointment, the agony of the legal process, and a few thousand dollars of debt.
But that was nearly 25 years ago now. Today, Miguel is a college graduate with a criminal justice degree, a homeowner, successful realtor, leader in the human services field, trusted school board member, and father of a large, blended family of nine children.
A father through marriage, adoption, and the more traditional way, he knows he couldn’t provide for his loved ones without the work ethic he developed in the challenging times and the education he earned – even if it was sometimes later than planned.
It’s also why he’s become a leader at Supportive Concepts for Families – one of Pennsylvania’s most successful human services organizations – because he knows every life matters and needs to be supported. He’s the Director of Program Support there today, a position that directly helps hundreds of residents.
It's also why Miguel ran for his local school board – and why he’s fought to improve our local schools, support teachers, and expand opportunity for every child.
That's the kind of person we need representing us in the State Senate...not a politician, but a REAL person who understands the reality of life today – the challenges and the opportunities, the ups and the downs.
Miguel has a history of fighting for his family – and has the experience, work ethic, and passion to fight for ALL our families in the State Senate.
